Session 7: Policy and Regulatory Initiatives to Address SDOH

Advancing health equity is a major priority for the Biden Administration and is central to the strategies being developed and deployed by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and other HHS agencies. CMS has pledged to adapt payment models to enhance equity and help address social determinants of health, increase the participation of providers and beneficiaries from underserved areas in value-based payment models, and strengthen data collection on beneficiaries’ race and ethnicity and social risks to target efforts to improve outcomes and to measure their impact. Despite the health sector’s growing interest in addressing SDOH, progress requires a robust network of community-based organizations to deliver services, which is lacking in many areas. The Agency for Community Living (ACL), which is responsible for supporting community-based aging and disability services, is an important partner in these efforts, and it is investing in the development of robust community social service networks, which can function as a “one-stop shop” to address a wide range of beneficiary needs. This session will give participating ACOs an opportunity to learn more about federal initiatives to improve health equity, discuss the challenges of this work in their own communities, and have a dialogue with senior federal officials about the opportunities for meaningful progress.
